Weekly Club Ride
- This Sunday’s ride was an early start. 9:00. Saturday had seen glorious sunshine and even though Sunday started off a bit misty it was still pleasantly warm. Peter met Sean at the Golden Lion and a route was discussed. As last weeks ride to Seaham was abandoned due to it being Baltic by the coast, we decided to try a route up to Seaham this week instead. Steve arrived bang on 9:00 o clock and we set off up the roller coaster that is the Coast Road. Up and down the deans carved out since the ice age by streams draining the East Durham Plateau. Crimdon Dean, Castle Eden Dean, Hawthorn Dean and taking in the climb at Easington along the way. We went through Cold Hessleden (wouldn’t want to live there) and arrived in Seaham via Dalton le Dale. Which sounds like a much nicer place to live than Cold Hessleden. Seaham itself was founded by the sea and named by the ancient britains. Their word for sea was sea and ham which was their way of saying bacon sandwiches so its Sea ham or as we say these days Seaham. The name is still a good description as there are many ham based products available in the shops cafes and pubs along the sea front. Ham and cheese sandwiches, Pea and Ham soup, Ham flavoured crisps, Bacon in sandwiches and as part of the full English breakfast. There are a lot of English towns and cities that reflect the national appetite for ham based products. There’s Northampton and Southampton and Nottingham of course. But this was Seaham and we chose a cafe with, unusually, no ham on offer. The big ice cream outside was probably a bit of a give away and the fact that it was an ice cream shop. Peter ordered and made the mistake of not getting sugar in Seans coffee (other drinks are available) however the sugar deficit was more than made up for by the highly processed muffins which were the only cake based foodstuffs on offer. No sooner had we sat down however we noticed that next door were doing burgers chips and beer. Probably ham burgers. Anyhow, we sat and enjoyed the sun and Mediterranean atmosphere of seaham harbour, built for the export of coal and fish in the Roman times, and wondered how we would get back. We decided to take the main road up to the temple of Mammon at Dalton Park
then double back the way we had come. Sean took charge of our return journey as he knows these roads like the veins in the back of his old wrinkly hands. He led us round some lovely lanes by South Hetton and Hasswell and turning past the castle at Ludworth. From there we turned up the steep bank towards the Durham road near. Thornley with Steve taking the lead. There is a farm called paradise on the way. It might be paradise for farmers but it’s hard work for cyclists! The run in back to town took us through Deaf Hill and Hart, two more place names to think about, but save that for another day. All in all another enjoyable social ride in fine weather with good company.
